Spillane’s Six Rules for Choral Success
1. IT’S MORE FUN TO BE GOOD. We are here to have the most fun we can. It will be more fun for you, me, and the audience if we are very good at what we do. Every rehearsal I will push you very hard to be the very best you can be and therefore, have the most fun.
2. ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING. No matter what your talent level, intelligence, or experience if you do not bring a positive attitude with you through the door, then you bring nothing.
3. NEVER BE AFRAID TO FAIL. The only way to fail in this choir is to not try. If you try hard and attend lessons, I guarantee you will do fine in this class. What we do is hard. It is hard to take a chance and sing in front of your peers. It is hard to show emotion in music. It is hard to possibly make a mistake where your peers might hear you. You will be better and be more secure every time you take a chance. Go for it!
4. COMMUINICATE, COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE! With this many students, there is no way I can possibly know what you are thinking unless you tell me. If you are sick, if you’ve just had a fight with a significant other and are upset, if there is anything that might affect your performance at a rehearsal, you must tell me or I will push you to be your best when maybe you cannot be your best. It is your responsibility to talk to me, e-mail me, leave me a note, communicate.
5. BE THERE AND BE ON TIME. The minute rehearsal begins, you are expected to be in your place, ready to make music. I will not waste your time by holding rehearsals late or by needlessly going over music. Don’t make the whole ensemble repeat something in rehearsal because you were late or unprepared. You also will get a schedule for the year today. You are responsible, as part of your grade, to participate in all concerts and rehearsals assigned to the ensemble. Work is not an excuse for missing choir commitments. If you have a problem with this, see #4 above.
6. SUPPORT EACH OTHER. This goes along with #3. The only way for people to be unafraid to fail is if we support each other when we try. There is no place in our performing ensembles for people who are unsupportive of others. Treat others as you would wish to be treated.
IKM-Manning High School
CHOIR HANDBOOK
2018-2019
Philosophy
Music education in the IKM-Manning School System provides aesthetic education through creative experiences and personal expression. Music education develops the artistic literacy of students commensurate with their individual abilities and provides opportunities to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes in using music effectively, independently, and in ensembles. As a result of Music Education, students will be able to enjoy and value music throughout their lives.
Goals of IKM-Manning Choral Program
1. To develop each student’s capability so that they may perform in accordance with his or her own ability.
2. To create a team-like atmosphere while providing an environment that fosters individual musical growth and creativity.
3. To pursue music in his or her life as a consumer, performer, and/or composer by evaluating and using music as an avocation or vocation.
4. To develop an understanding of a variety of styles, forms, and idioms of musical literature from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds
5. To promote awareness of how the arts and other disciplines are interrelated.
6. To develop each student’s musical literacy through knowledge of the fundamentals of music, including the study of voices and/or instruments and performances.
7. To communicate our music and our talents to our audience so that they may also take with them the pleasure of music all of their days.
Objections of the Chorus
· Develop a true understanding and appreciation of fine music through ensemble, small groups, and solo experiences.
· Develop the singing ability of students with the program.
· Develop self-discipline.
· Communicate our talents to our audiences.
· Aid in the mental, social, and physical development of the individuals in chorus.
· Develop into independent musicians.
· Have Fun! In a worthwhile and engaging musical way.
Expectations and Requirements of Students
¨ All students in chorus will give their best effort in class.
¨ All students are required to attend lessons.
¨ All students must participate in ALL public performances.
¨ All students will be expected to show the instructor, fellow students, and most importantly, themselves respect!
¨ All students will be expected to follow the guidelines of the music room and department.
¨ All students will be expected to wear black closed-toe shoes, black socks, and black slacks for every performance.
General Guidelines for Rehearsal and Choir Appearances
Þ Arrive at all rehearsals, concerts, and activities on time.
Þ Be fair to yourself as well as others by giving your best effort in class.
Þ Use school equipment and property appropriately.
Þ Be willing to dedicate yourself to creating the best vocal music ensemble possible.
Þ SUCCESS depends on the second letter.
Rehearsal Participation
Rehearsal participation will be based on the student’s rehearsal technique. Areas of consideration will include, but are not limited to the following: listening skills, attentiveness, posture, vocal technique, preparation, cooperation, and leadership.
Music Care and Checkout
All chorus members will be assigned a chorus folder and music for which they are responsible. Students are encouraged to take folders home to practice, but are responsible for having them present at rehearsals. Each student is expected to take care of the music and folder so that it is not damaged or lost. If your folder or music is damaged or lost, you will be responsible for the replacement cost of the music and/or folder.
Concert and Festival Attendance
Attendance at performances is very important so that there are no missing parts in a piece. There are only TWO valid reasons for missing a concert.
1. ILLNESS
2. EXTREME FAMILY EMERGENCY
If a sudden family emergency occurs, leave a message at the school to let me know of the situation. I MUST BE NOTIFIED! The student will be given an assignment to make up points for a missed performance.
WORK IS NOT A LEGITIMANT REASON FOR MISSING A CONCERT OR PERFORMANCE!
Failure to notify me of a missed performance date will result in a zero for that performance. When a student misses a performance, a paper will be assigned on a subject chosen by the instructor. This paper must be completed and handed into the instructor within three school days. If a student is unable to complete the paper, detention after school will be enforced for as long as it takes to fulfill the missed performance.
Classroom Grading Procedures
Grading will be based on the following:
A possible 25 points will be given each week and will vary from day to day. The points will be determined by but not limited to daily effort in class, positive attitude, appropriate contributions to class activities, and song quizzes. Deductions will be made when necessary.
Students are required to attend weekly lessons throughout each quarter. Students will be assigned a time slot as their free time allows. Failure to attend a lesson in the required timeframe results in a zero. The student is still expected to complete the missed lesson or an incomplete will be granted.
A possibility of 100 points will be given for all major performances. Only illness and emergencies will be accepted as excused absences. The student will be assigned a project to make up the missed points. Again, ALL performances are required.
High School Choir Lettering Policy
Students who wish to letter in choir will participate in extra activities such as the musical, All-State or honor choirs, solo and ensemble contest, and will be an integral part of the choir’s practices and performances, including home concerts and state sponsored contests. To letter in choir you must participate in at least three extra activities among those listed above.
